I began as many others did.... I was conceived in the usual fashion on a farm about five miles from town in West Texas. I was born in 1950, on a Thursday, exactly 9 months and 1 week after the first day of spring.
That was the year that the Korean War began, "All About Eve" won the Oscar for Best Picture, the first Xerox copy machine was produced, the population of the U.S. was 151,684,000, "Frosty the Snowman" was a big hit, and gasoline cost 27¢ a gallon.
Four months later I developed pneumonia in both lungs and almost
died, but I didn't. I grew up on a cotton farm with asthma (er...that's
ME that had the asthma, not the farm...), two sisters, a really
mean pet rooster that used to chase me around the house, and
a set of parents I would not have picked had I been given the
choice.(I am trying to be nice here!) I hated farm life. Luckily,
when my mother finally left my father in 1962, we escaped the
country and made our way to the "Big City" (San Diego),
where I more or less stayed until September of 1979 (except for
a couple of years of college 1970-1972 back in Arlington, Texas).
September 11, 1979 was the day I finally made my way "Home".
I moved to San Francisco, fell in love with the city and have
lived in the Castro district ever since...
I have been out of the closet for about 35 years now...I don't think I would have fared so well back on the farm.
Yadda, Yadda, Yadda....
The End
Here I am at about 9 or 10 years old in our
farmhouse, making designer clothes for my sister's doll. My mother
snapped this picture mainly to embarrass me, and at the time,
it made my life miserable, but now I am glad to have proof that
I was ALWAYS a "sissy" and that I never made any kind
of "choice" about my orientation! By the way, in 1963,
my older sister, Cece, received a handmade collection of designer
Barbie clothes for Christmas. You can bet that she had the only
Barbie on the block who owned custom made blue gingham culottes.
